How did I celebrate National Running Day? By making “CLEAN” energy gels of course!

All Natural Energy Gel

I was on a mission today to make a "Good Clean" Energy Gel that would replace "GU" during endurance events.  I felt National Running Day to be the perfect day to try it!  Well, truth be told I need to use it during an endurance event I am participating in this weekend and GU has not worked for me.  It upsets my stomach and has caused a sugar spike then a crash.  No bueno.

OK, here it is 100% natural, made with superfoods and actually taste super yummy!  (yes I know, it does not "look" super yummy but trust me it is).

I am pretty confident this natural energy gel along with Nada Surf which is headlining the event is going to keep me Rockin' and Rolling through the race.  Who knows, maybe I will be giving Meb Keflezighi a run for his money.  Hahaha!

Cacao Energy gel aka "CLEAN" GU

Adapted from Thrive Fitness by Brendan  Frazier (Professional Vegan Triathlete)
Buy Thrive Fitness - Vegan-Based Training Program (with recipes) here.  Practically every page is dogeared on my copy.

-Pitted Medjool Dates

-1 Tbsp agave nectar

-1 Tbsp ground salba (chia seeds)-I grounded mine in coffee grinder

-1 Tbsp Coconut oil

-1 tsp lemon zest

-1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

- 1 tbsp raw cacao nibs :)

sea salt to taste- * amount can also depend on how much you sweat

Blend all ingredients together in high speed blender into a gel like consistency.  The gel can be put in a re-sealable plastic bag and carried on long workouts or during a race or event.  You can also put in a gel flask.

Think about it.... If you entered your car in a race you would fill it's tank with premium high octane fuel right?  Same thing goes for your body!  In the moment of an endurance event when you need the boost the most, fuel yourself with natural superfoods.  The bioavailibility of natural foods are much higher.  So you will absorb more nutrients and faster. Yes?  The coconut oil in these provide direct energy to the liver and dramatically improve endurance when combined with carbs.  So, when the immediate energy from the glucose in the dates wear off, this is when the slower-release energy from the salba kicks in.  Because of this you feel sustained energy without the crash.

*If you sweat a lot you may add a bit more salt to minimize cramping that is caused by losing electrolytes in your sweat.

Wish I made this sooner. I can see this "CLEAN" Cacao gel can be a perfect option not only for my workouts, training sessions and events but just to keep my energy up naturally for a busy day. Try these out, and be proud that you are running on "Clean" fuel.

How many dates for this recipe? How many servings does this make? I cannot wait to try this!

This recipe calles for two large Medjool dates and it is about 3 servings. I recommend doubling it and storing the extra in the fridge. Especially if your in training you want to have these on hand. They are great for before, during and even after a training session or event. Enjoy!
