Kale & Swiss Chard: A perfect way to green up your juices.

Juicing is one of the best ways to detoxify and replenish yourself simultaneously.  So why don't more of us make our own fruit and vegetable juice?  The answer I hear the most is "my juicer is too hard to clean, or it takes too long, or I don't know what to put in my juicer."  Ok, my rebuttal: Juicers have come a long way.... Not only are quality juicers way more affordable but now they are also a cinch to store, clean and maintain.

Drinking fresh juice especially green juice has tremendous health benefits.  The potent health benefits of a green nutrition coupled with the growing interest in preventative healthcare diets have helped the juicer earn some very valuable counter space in America's kitchens.  Imagine... All you have to do is throw some fruits and veggies into your juicer and out will come a delicious, beautifying and immune-boosting elixir.   Sounds to good to be true? Well it is not. Try it  out yourself.  Don't be intimidated by what to put in the juicer.  Usually, anything you have in your kitchen or fridge will make delicious and nourishing juice.  If you don't have a juicer yet or you have one and want to get re-aquainted here is a CRASH COURSE...

 

Types of juicers:

Breville 800 Centrifugal

Centrifugal:

These juicers use a fast-spinning grater to shred the fruits or veggies. The juice then goes through a strainer and the pulp is expelled into a container.  BTW you can use the pulp in recipes to boost nutrition in your food i.e. mix it into your meatloaf or lentil loaf, or use it as compost.  EXAMPLES: Breville Ikon multispeed, Breville juice Fountain, Omega 4000.

 

These are the easiest to clean and are the most affordable.  The juice extracted from these juicers are the quickest to oxidize so it is recommended if you will not be drinking the juice right away to pour it into a mason jar, cover tightly and store in the fridge (ideally you want to drink this juice the same day you extracted it).

Masticating: These juicers use one slowly turning screw-shaped gear that chews up the veggies and squeezes the juice through a stainless-steel screen.  This gently tears open the cell membranes to release their nutrients.  EXAMPLES: Champion Juicer, Hurom Slow Juicer

These juicers extract more juice and therefore you get less foam, a longer fridge life (3days), and more enzymes in the juice.

Twin Gear: These work at lower speeds and the two gears removing practically every drop of juice from the fruit and veggies.  EXAMPLES: Green Star Juice Extractor, Samson Ultra Juicer

The juice from these juicers lasts up to 3-4 days. These juicers can also make nut-butters and ice cream. The down side, they are large, and more pricey.

Bottom line: the juicer you are going to use is the one to invest in.

I have found that cleaning the juicer right after making the juice, but before you enjoy the juice, works really well. Use a small scrub brush and some warm running water to clean the parts.  It only takes a minute. If you simply can't spare the minute you can leave the mesh basket soaking in water to prevent the pulp from sticking to the mesh.

Now that we have this out of the way the list of BENEFITS from juicing should remove all obstacles as to why we don't do it more often.

What Fresh Juice Can Do For You.....

  • Alkalizing (neutralizes your bodies pH) P.S. disease does not like to hangout in neutral pH, but LOVES acidic conditions caused by the Standard American Diet
  • Is a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, protein and oxygen
  • gives you the "glow" to name a few....

A few things to remember...  You want to aim for a ratio of 3 veggies (at least one green, preferably leafy) to 1 fruit.  If you are new to juicing you can use a bit more fruit to get in the awesome habit of juicing.  Don't be intimidated or think this is only for extreme health nuts.  Have fun with it!  Try new fruits and veggies, involve your family (my kids love to dig out veggies from the produce drawer of the fridge and ask can we make juice with this?  And they drink it, and LOVE it).  SO don't feel like you have to go to the market every time you want to make juice.  Any fruit or veggie combo you have is great!  So... yet another bonusJuicing, ends up saving you money, because it is a way to use produce that would have gone bad if you did not not turn it into glorious, fresh, juice! If there are certain ailments or conditions you want to address then you can choose more consciously what fruits and veggies to include in your juice to better support your bodies ability to heal.  I challenge you to drink 1-2 fresh glasses of juice per day for 7 days.  And take note of how AWESOME you feel!!!

The Recipes

1.) Your body says "thank you" GREEN Juice

Kale, chard,collard greens, dandelion greens, spinach,romaine lettuce, parsley, pure water (or coconut water), apple. The juice is packed with phytochemicals and all things good for your body. The coconut water is optional but recommended if you are feeling dehydrated. This juice will give you mad energy. Are you ready?

2.) The Refresher

Cucumber, cilantro, spinach, lime. This juice is refreshing and hydrating. You may want to stir in some coconut oil for its many health benefit and also to increase the bioavailability of the nutrients in the spinach. Cilantro is known to pull out metals from the body. So this juice is good clean health.

3.) Good Morning Green

Kale, celery stalks, broccoli, pears and or apples, 1" piece of ginger root.  Ginger stimulates digestion.  It can be used to aide nausea and morning sickness and kale is quite possibly the most nutrient dense food.  period.  Need I say more? for more recipes using this superfoods get inspired here

4.) Rhubarbalicious

Fresh rhubarb stalks, strawberries, spinach, lettuce.  Rhubarb is a detoxifier and cools the liver after one has eaten too much rich food.

*NOTE: any amounts of the ingredients in the recipes above is fine. Juicing is not an exact science. Experiment, have fun, and find your FAVE!

    What a great article. Green drinks are something that I have not tried yet and it is a goal of mine for this year. Can I use my VitaMix? I don’t think I can invest in one more piece of equipment right now. THANK YOU!!!!! Sarah

      YES! The Vitamix is an amazing piece of equipment. You can make many great green smoothies and soups with it. YUM! Green smoothies and green juices are both awesome! You are getting more fiber if you use the VitaMix so you will be satisfied longer. Juice is just more hydrating and absorbed faster so you will feel the energy from the greens kick in a bit sooner. Both are great and your body will thank you for it.
